If you’re lusting after an island getaway where the beaches are pearly white, the waters crystal clear and umbrella-clad cocktails never stop flowing, the spectacular Seychelles is your next stop. With 115 (mostly uninhabited) islands, extensive lush forests and the most unreal scenery, it is a place of astonishing natural beauty. Here are seven secrets of this tropical paradise…
1. Sensational beaches
Ok, so this is a given, seeing as we’re talking island life, but the Seychelles really has some of the best and most beautiful beaches in the world. From the turquoise-blue waters to the powder-white sand and incredible rock formations, the beaches here are truly idyllic – the perfect spot to relax, soak up the sun and take in the beauty of your surrounds. There are plenty to choose from so it’s easy to less crowded options, some of which are entirely deserted

2. Year-round bliss
Since The Seychelles enjoys balmy, tropical weather throughout the year, any time is a good time to visit. The temperature averages at 27°C and rarely drops below 24°C, making every day a beach day (more or less) or a day for exploring the islands. April, May, October and November are the best months to go though, since these are the “transition times” between the hot and humid northwest trade wins and the cooler southeast trade winds.
3. Perfect combination of relaxation and adventure
The Seychelles is so much more than just a beach destination. In fact, it offers something for everyone, from the outdoor lovers to the history buffs and water babies. Spend your days hiking, cycling, diving, snorkelling, sailing and shopping, or explore the islands via jeep and get acquainted with the gorgeous colonial capital city, Victoria. If you love discovering a new beach every day and pottering around small villages, this is the place to go.
Walk the walk: The Morne Seychellois National Park boasts a host of coastal paths and trail networks, perfect for a leisurely hike with amazing views.
4. Delicious cuisine
Food, glorious food! Because of its rich mix of cultures that includes Asian, European and African, expect a taste explosion when it comes to Seychelles fare. The delicious Creole food features plenty of fish and seafood, as well as several sweet delicacies, such as sweet-coconut nougat. Octopus curry is also a firm favourite and a must-try for those who love bold flavours and some spice.
Wash it down with: It wouldn’t be an island experience without genuine local rum – try the bakka rum. In fact, you can even take a tour of the famous distillery called Takamaka on Mahé. Other beverages worth sampling are the locally brewed beers, either Seybrew or Eku, as well as kalou, a palm wine. Virgin options include coconut water and fresh juices.
5. Amazing natural offerings
From dazzling coral reefs to jungles, mountains, granite boulders and diverse wildlife and flora, the Seychelles is a playground of natural beauty. It boasts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Vallee de Mai and Aldabra Atoll. Most coral reefs are completely intact and bursting whale sharks, rays, puffer fish and hawksbill turtles, to name a few. With six marine national parks, colourful underwater magic is everywhere. Flying foxes, black parrots, blue pigeons and giant geckoes are just some of the unique creatures you’ll spy.
Giant tortoises and “love nuts”: Aldabra giant tortoises populate many of the islands, while the endemic coco de mer palm produces the sensous “love nuts.” Named for their suggestive shape, these fruits can only be found on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse.
6. Festival fun
Each year, the island of Mahé hosts the vibrant Festival Kreol. It’s a week-long event that combines food, music, crafts and performances that draw people from all over the world. Taking place in the last week of October, it’s a must-see that gives you the chance to explore the island while experiencing local energy.
7. Easy to pair with an African safari
With its close proximity to East Africa, visiting The Seychelles provides the ideal opportunity to combine an island holiday with an unforgettable safari adventure. A popular choice is Botswana, home to the famous Chobe National Park, Moremi Game Reserve and the incredible Okavango Delta. South Africa is always an excellent safari destination too and is a just short flight away. Essentially, you can have the best of both worlds: beach bliss and safari magic.
